LIBS – Rapid Elemental Analysis and Chemical Imaging (Firefly)

Product details

What Is LIBS (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy)?

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is an analytical technique that utilizes high-energy laser pulses to interact with a sample. When the laser is focused onto the sample surface, the intense energy rapidly heats and vaporizes the material, generating a high-temperature plasma. As the plasma cools, it emits light at characteristic wavelengths. By analyzing these emission spectra, the elemental composition and relative concentrations within the sample can be identified.

Thanks to its rapid measurement speed, minimal sample preparation requirements, and applicability to solids, liquids, and gases, LIBS is particularly well suited for on-site, real-time analysis and applications where sampling is difficult or limited.

Key Characteristics of LIBS Technology

  • Rapid analysis: Plasma formation and emission occur within an extremely short time, enabling fast elemental analysis.
  • Multi-element detection: Simultaneous detection of multiple elements, including metals, non-metals, and even light elements.
  • Minimal sample preparation: Compared to other analytical techniques, LIBS requires little to no sample pre-treatment and supports a wide range of sample forms.
  • In-situ analysis capability: Enables real-time, on-site measurements, reducing the complexity of sample transport and storage.

With these advantages, LIBS has been widely applied in environmental monitoring, industrial process control, archaeological studies, material characterization, and defense and security applications.

Firefly: A LIBS System for Rapid Multi-Element Analysis and Chemical Imaging

The Firefly LIBS system integrates advanced Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy technology to deliver rapid multi-element analysis and chemical imaging. The system provides accurate and real-time compositional data, allowing users to perform material analysis directly on site with minimal sample preparation. It is ideally suited for applications that demand high efficiency, mobility, and fast decision-making.

Key Features of the Firefly LIBS System

  • Multi-element analysis capability: Firefly simultaneously detects metals, non-metals, and trace elements, which is essential for identifying complex material compositions.
  • Chemical imaging: Through spatially resolved measurements, Firefly generates elemental distribution maps that clearly visualize the spatial distribution of chemical components. This is especially valuable for heterogeneous samples in materials science and geological research.
  • High-speed, real-time data: The system delivers rapid analytical results, making it suitable for applications requiring immediate feedback, such as manufacturing quality control and environmental monitoring.
  • Minimal sample preparation: Firefly effectively analyzes a wide variety of sample types with little to no pre-treatment, helping to streamline workflows and reduce analysis time.
  • Portable and versatile design: The Firefly LIBS system offers high mobility and can be deployed flexibly in laboratories, production lines, or remote field environments.

Application Areas of Firefly

The Firefly LIBS system is widely used in:

  • Environmental monitoring and pollution source identification
  • Mining and geological sample analysis
  • Industrial process control and in-line quality inspection
  • Archaeology and cultural heritage material identification
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing and process monitoring
  • Defense and security applications (e.g., preliminary identification of suspicious materials)

By combining rapid elemental analysis with chemical imaging capabilities, Firefly represents an advanced evolution of LIBS technology, providing fast and in-depth analytical insight for scientific research, industrial applications, and field exploration.
